'A truly great book ... an utterly gripping thriller' Justin Cartwright, Sunday Telegraph

Berlin, 1940, and the city is filled with fear. At the house on 55 Jablonski Strasse, its various occupants try to live under Nazi rule in their different ways- the bullying Hitler loyalists the Persickes, the retired judge Fromm and the unassuming couple Otto and Anna Quangel. Then the Quangels receive the news that their beloved son has been killed fighting in France. Shocked out of their quiet existence, they begin a silent campaign of defiance, and a deadly game of cat and mouse develops between the Quangels and the ambitious Gestapo inspector Escherich. When petty criminals Kluge and Borkhausen also become involved, deception, betrayal and murder ensue, tightening the noose around the Quangels' necks ...

I started reading this novel whilst on holiday in Berlin last winter, and ended up spending snowy days indoors, warmed by the fast-paced and weaving storylines of this great novel. Fallada, who struggled through life under the Nazi regime, paints a cast of at first starkly contrasting characters - those who run the Nazi regime, those who succumb to it, those who fight it, those who ignore it. As the novel goes on the distinction between many of these types blurs, although those who choose wholeheartedly to fight against the oppression seem to gain courage and strength to continue fighting for the good of both themselves and society. A compelling work which highlights the importance of self-determination in fighting for one's beliefs.
