In 1907, a young Midwesterner afire with the Gospel traveled to Persia to teach English in a missionary school. He arrived in the midst of a democratic revolution-the first of its kind in the Middle East. Among Baskerville's students were orators and firebrands for the cause, who educated him on their struggle for constitutional democracy-inspiring him to join them in their fight against authoritarianism. Killed in battle, Baskerville is still venerated as a martyr in Iran today. His death helped galvanize the revolution to remove the Shah from power, bring about a new constitution, and rebuild parliament-a temporary victory. Today, young Iranians again struggle against autocracy. In this enthralling narrative of a fascinating time in history, best-selling author Reza Aslan gives us a powerful parable about universal ideals, asking how seriously do we take our ideals of constitutional democracy and whose freedom do we support?
