This work weaves together the study of gender during World War I with that of the evolution of nationalism and colonialism. Locating the war in the longer era, 1870-1939, the collection examines the shifts of the borders of femininities and masculinities in their relations to women's and men's lived experiences of global modern war, revolution and social break-up. By including work on Great Britain, France, Germany and the United States, as well as studies on Russia, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Palestine and West Africa, the author challenges some current interpretations of the gendered experience of war, especially that of women, and its relation to national identity.
