Following its bestselling edition of Bradshaw's Handbook 1863, Old House brings you this fascinating guide to Europe's rail network on the very brink of the First World War.

Published in 1913, it is divided into three sections: timetables for services covering the continent, short guides to each city and notable destination and features, and a wealth of advertisements and ephemeral materials concerning hotels, restaurants and services that might be required by the early twentieth century traveller by rail.

It affords a fascinating glimpse of fin de siècle Europe and of a transport network that was shortly to be devastated by the greatest war the world had ever seen.

George Bradshaw

George Bradshaw became famous for producing the world's most successful and longest running combined railway timetable a publication to be found in the library of every Victorian traveller.

But in the middle of the 19th century, with the railway network reaching its peak, his company shifted focus to tourist guides, such as this one, designed for the rail traveller.

My father is a huge fan of the BBC's Great British Railway Journeys, so when Christmas rolled around of course I searched for a copy of Bradshaw's Guide! This edition of the Guide is faithful to the original, allowing my father to read along with every episode. It's been an excellent addition to his library of wartime transport and logistics books and he's always very gleeful when he shows people his copy of the book.

It's also a very useful thing to have on hand for trivia - using it he was able to answer a question I've had for years about the price of Poirot's ticket on the Orient Express (turns out, it was around £19)!
