Introduced by Helen Garner
Barbara Baynton's short-story collection Bush Studies is famous for its stark realism-for not romanticising bush life, instead showing all its bleakness and harshness.
Economic of style, influenced by the great nineteenth-century Russian novelists, Baynton presents the Australian bush as dangerous and isolating for the women who inhabit it.
'The terror Baynton evokes,' Helen Garner writes in her introduction to the book, 'is elemental, sexual, unabashedly female.'
'So precise, so complete, with such insight into detail and such force of statement, it ranks with the masterpieces of realism in any language.' Bulletin

And I don't mean that in a denigratory way. Baynton's stories about the bush are so effectively unnerving because the situations are so realistic and believable. These stories present a side of Australia that Australia did not want itself or others to see; an Australia that wasn't sunny and laid back , but where mates turned on each other, bush-life was lonely and miserable, and the only creature you could trust was your dog.

Two of the stories are heavy on phonetic dialogue, which made them VERY tiresome to follow. The rest are fine, and I'd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for an unromanticised depiction of life in the bush, as well as anyone interested in such stories from a (mostly) female perspective. An interesting book for sure.
