Attached to an order of nuns who had been working in the slums since the 1870s, Jennifer tells the story not only of the women she treated, but also of the community of nuns (including one who was accused of stealing jewels from Hatton Garden) and the camaraderie of the midwives with whom she trained. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

Anyone familiar with the show would be able to pick out and recognize the stories in here that were adapted to screen. It was insightful to see that nothing was too delicate of a matter to discuss and truthfully this is full of medical jargon. A glossary at the end proved very helpful and I'll admit I had to turn to the back numerous times to educate myself. The language in the book is quite literal when it comes to the cockney accent/language so sometimes it was a bit difficult to discern what was being said. Overall it was quite enjoyable :)
