Although prohibited in most of today's world, cannabis and humanity have a shared history that extends far back into ancient times. Evidence of cannabis' role in the production of cloth and rope goes back more than ten thousand years. As well, archaeological evidence indicating the ritual use of cannabis dates back to 3500 BCE. Ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks and Persians used cannabis in Temple rituals, and for medical purposes, as has long been acknowledged. It has generally been seen that the ancient Hebrews, who sat amongst these Nations, often dominated by them, and whose religious history was recorded in the Bible's Old Testament and the Hebrew Torah and Talmud, rejected these practices and had no relationship with cannabis. However, in 1936, a little known Polish anthropologist and etymologist, Sula Benet put forth the controversial hypothesis that the Hebrew, kaneh and kaneh bosm, identified cannabis, and was mistranslated as calamus when the Hebrew texts were translated into Greek, following through into later translations. Amongst Hebrew scholars, however, there is no confirmation on the term, only debate about its botanical identity, with various suggestions such as Lemon grass, Cinnamon Bark, Ginger Grass, and other plants. Claims about kaneh and kaneh bosm seemed destined to remain an obscure, unproven, linguistic hypothesis, until 2020, when evidence from a 2,800 year old temple site in tel Arad, Jerusalem confirmed the ritual use of cannabis Among the ancient Hebrews, and the identification of the Biblical kaneh bosm.
