One of the oldest centres for the study of children's development in the United States, the University of Minnesota's Institute of Child Development was organized in 1925 with the aid of funds from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial (New York). Founded in the belief that the scientific study of child development was essential to the promotion of child welfare, the unit was established as an integral part of the University of Minnesota. Begun in 1966, the Minnesota Symposium on Child Psychology is an important intellectual and social occasion that provides opportunities for scholars to consider the theoretical and practical implications of their research programmes. The 32nd Symposium was held in 2000 and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Institute.
