Community is all about sharing good food, giving you endless ideas on delicious salads to serve up for your family, friends and neighbours.

These simple, sustainable and healthy recipes feature fresh, seasonal produce and inject colour, life and flair into that most modest of everyday meals: the salad.Rather than being simply sides, Community's salads are meals in their own right, giving vegetables, legumes, herbs and nuts their moment to shine.

The recipes in Community are inspired by author Hetty McKinnon's community kitchen, Arthur Street Kitchen, where Hetty single-handedly makes and delivers homemade salads to residents in Surry Hills, Sydney, on Thursday and Friday every week. All by bike! Hetty's salads use only the freshest produce, sourced locally wherever possible. Inspired first and foremost by the seasons, Hetty also takes cues from what she sees, smells and experiences from the world around her. At the heart of every dish is a core vegetable, around which a thoughtful culinary story is built, resulting in honest, inventive and hearty salads that deliver big, punchy flavours.

Hetty McKinnon

Hetty McKinnon is a home cook with a passion for vegetables. In 2011, she established Arthur Street Kitchen, a community kitchen with a simple concept: local food for local people. From her inner city terrace kitchen in Surry Hills, Sydney, Hetty dreamed up and cooked flavour-packed, hearty, seasonal salads, which she delivered to locals on her bicycle.

In 2015, Hetty, with her family and Arthur Street Kitchen in tow, relocated to the rather larger neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York City, where she continues to deliver salads to locals, run creative pop-up events and cater lunches, making food friends along the way. Hetty also writes about her experience of food, life and adventure in Brooklyn on her blog.

Her first cookbook, Community: Salad Recipes from Arthur Street Kitchen, was published in 2014.

This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever bought. I am not a vegetarian but this book could almost make me turn! The recipes are easy, interesting and above all, DELICIOUS! Even my young children, who are usually just content with steamed broccoli, have enjoyed the range of dishes and the variety of cooking techniques espoused in this book. This is really an Australian 'Ottolenghi' - if you're a fan of Yotam, you'll love this book. I particularly like the photography and the way the book is sorted into categories of vegetable - it makes seasonal cooking so much easier.

Support this wonderful Australian cookbook - you won't regret it!
