Covet is the first book in the Fallen Angels series by American author, J.R.Ward. As with her popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series, this one is set in Caldwell, NY, and while there is some overlap with characters and places, this series has an entirely different set of tough guys fighting evil. Jim Heron, currently on reserve from SpecOps and working as a carpenter for a construction company run by a very rich self-made billionaire, finds himself electrocuted and talking to angels: no, its not a hallucination. Somehow, he has been chosen in the fight for good against evil, and his first assignment of seven (as in deadly sins) is to save said billionaire, Vin diPietro. Not much guidance as to how and why, but apparently his workmates Adrian and Eddie, complete with tattoos, Harleys and attitude, are part of the deal. As is a nasty shape-shifting Demon currently looking like a model, Devina. And a stray dog that doesnt cast a shadow either, creatively named Dog. This instalment has magic mirrors, a virgin sacrifice, ritual exorcism and some unusual water-pistols. Its not BDB, but it is easily as enjoyable, and BDB fans will enjoy the minor roles that Trez, Detective de la Cruz, the Iron Mask and the Commodore play. Fritz, The Reverend and ZeroSum get a mention and Phury even makes a tiny cameo. Wards characters have some depth and her plot is highly original. She sets up the next instalment so readers will know where things are headed with Crave. Another series that is likely to be habit-forming.
