We invite you to journey with 11-year-old Cassidy as she discovers what Diversity and Inclusion mean through the enchanting tale of an unlikely creature found in her grandparent's garden. On the last day of her 5th grade school year, Cassidy Aoki shares her summer plans to visit her grandparent's garden with her class. These are the grandparents that she hasn't seen since she was 6 years old because her grandfather hadn't come to terms with the fact that his Japanese son is married to a Black woman and he has a mixed granddaughter. When Cassidy arrives at her grandparents she discovers that she can talk to the flowers in her grandparent's garden and to Kenji, the family dog. She learns that Kenji and the youngest rose in the family of roses, Emily, have a special and loving relationship, one that produced the creation of a creature named Dower. Like Cassidy, Dower is mixed - part flower and part dog. Dower provides an emotional, creative, and introspective look into Cassidy's life and her experiences growing up with a Black mother and a Japanese father through a twist and turn of events as Granpa Aoki and family face losing their home and community garden to a corporate conglomerate working to eliminate local gardens and push GMO products. The fight for ownership and freedom begins to intertwine the stories of the characters and become a catalyst for unity, healing, and above all, love.
