A Holocaust survivor tells his compelling family story of escape and survival in China and Australia during WWII.

*Forward by by Peter FitzSimons*

Living in Berlin in 1939, three-year-old Peter Nachemstein and his parents were forced to escape Nazi Germany by fleeing to Shanghai – one of the only havens left for them and 18,000 other European Jews. Although safe, they became displaced and isolated from the rest of their family, who were scattered across Europe.

In Escape from Berlin, Peter Nash retraces what became of his family members following the devastating impact of WWII. Using remarkable photographs and documents to bring their captivating stories to life, Peter recounts his own experiences of dislocation as a young boy in alien Shanghai, and then later as a teenager and adult in Australia.

PRAISE FOR ESCAPE FROM BERLIN:

"Meticulously researched and impeccably detailed, Escape from Berlin brings light to a fascinating but not widely known chapter of Holocaust history in a family story that reflects the experiences of many in the Jewish community.

Other writers might have been tempted to imaginatively enlarge the tale attached to some of these names. That is not the brief Peter Nash gives himself. His commitment to memory is about the facts, as bare as some of these might present themselves. Escape from Berlin is a tightly packed suitcase. It carries a heavy load with grace and candour."-Sydney Morning Herald

'Few stories, I am sure, are more fascinating or more inspiring than the saga of Peter Nash.' PETER FITZSIMONS

Peter Nash (Nachemstein) was born in Berlin. He was among 18,000 European Jews who escaped Nazi persecution during WW2 by fleeing to Shanghai, where no entry visa was required and thereafter to Australia.

Peter researched the fate of close family in Europe and found dozens were lost and only three survived. He also researched and found living Nachemstein and extended family around the world.

This book is a most interesting account of what happened to the members of one extended Jewish family during and following WWII. It personalises the information that many of us have read about the atrocities committed by the Nazis.
I found it difficult to keep track of all the family members, despite the family trees provided at the front of the book. However, the variety of experiences by different members of the family provide interesting reading.
