Working as an underground force, the French Resistance was initially formed spontaneously from scattered groups of the displaced and discontent. As the war progressed the Resistance developed into a secret army, terrorizing the occupying forces and would-be collaborators alike although they were unprotected by the Geneva Convention and faced torture and execution if captured. Terry Crowdy

TERRY CROWDY is a British military history author specializing in the Napoleonic Wars and the history of espionage. He has written extensively on French Revolutionary and Napoleonic infantry, with a particular focus on daily life in barracks and on campaign.

His works include a history of the 'Incomparable' 9th Light Infantry Regiment, and a study of the Battle of Marengo. He is a Fellow of the International Napoleonic Society and a Member of the Society of Authors.

Steve Noon

Steve Noon was born in Kent, UK, and attended art college in Cornwall. He's had a life-long passion for illustration, and since 1985 has worked as a professional artist, illustrating over 30 books for Osprey. He lives in Cardiff, UK.
