There are two sides to every story...

This is the US No. 1 bestselling novel that everyone is talking about...

'What are you thinking, Amy?' The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions stormcloud over every marriage: 'What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do?'

Just how well can you ever know the person you love? This is the question that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his.

And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war. . .

  • Amazingly disturbing characters.

    by on

I’m not going to explain too much of the plot in fear of spoiling it. But I would recommend you don’t start this book unless you’re prepared to not do anything else for the day. It is brilliant and gripping and you really won’t be able to put it down. Flynn’s descriptions and writing is effortless, I don’t think I have read such strong characterisations of psychotic behavior. With a rumour that the ending of the film is different to the book, I highly recommend you read this before you see the film!

  • 2Dimensional

Did not live up to hype, although I couldn't put it down. The characters felt unrealistic as did the ending. The plot was supposed to be thrilling but once you read it you could feel that you knew it would happen and why- very two dimensional. An attempt at a multi layered read but came across unrealistic and forced. Maybe because I could not relate to the mindset or perhaps because I expected it be a great book but I was disappointed.

  • Really Thrilling, Would Recommend

I was so excited to finally have the time to sit down and read this book. I had high expectations for this novel and in some aspects, I wasn't disappointed. I had a few problems with it but I overly enjoyed it and will be picking up another Gillian Flynn novel in the foreseeable future.

Flynn's writing style is like a dream. Words are like instruments in an orchestra for her. They seamlessly fall together resonating brilliance. It was an absolute pleasure to read her words even if the content wasn't all that exciting for me.

I genuinely felt that this book, towards the middle, was a little boring, a little hard to push through. Parts of the story were being told twice or three times from either Nick or Amy's point of view and it just kind of dragged. I think I definitely preferred the second half of the book to the first, even though the ending was kind of a disappointment. There didn't seem to be adequate repercussions for the characters and despite Nick seeming normal, he turned out to be a budding psychopath with his assimilating lifestyle.

Apart from the story dragging a bit, and the ending disappointing me (which isn't a deal-breaker for me), I loved the characters, especially Amy. Amy was so perfectly psychotic that it was a pleasure to attempt to understand her insanity. When Flynn delved into Amy's past, I was legitimately shocked at how crazy she actually was. This is one of the main reasons I enjoyed reading the book.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has the time to read about a screwed up marriage to a legitimate pscyho. This was definitely my hook for the novel.
