HEART-STOPPING TERROR

Dr Abby Di Matteo has made the best - and the worst - decision of her career. Instead of giving a donor heart to the wealthy patient it's been reserved for, she uses it to save a dying boy's life.

Luckily, a new heart appears that's perfectly suited to the original patient, and the furore dies down. But then Abby discovers that the organ has been obtained illegally. Defying the hospital's commands, she starts her own investigation...

And uncovers a murderous conspiracy that will threaten her very life . . .

Harvest is the 9th stand-alone novel by Tess Gerritsen, and is the first of her medical thrillers. Set in Boston, it tells the story of second year surgical resident, Abby DiMatteo, who, in the process of facilitating a heart transplant for a 17-year-old boy, stumbles upon a possible cash-for-organs scheme operating at her hospital, Bayside. But her discovery seems to have upset certain people and she soon finds herself the defendant in several malpractice suits, suspected of euthanasing a patient, and her car vandalised with animal entrails. And who are those people? Is it the extremely wealthy man whose wife was passed over for the donor heart, a man unaccustomed to being denied anything? Is it the people involved in the organ transplant racket? And is her boyfriend, a surgeon on the transplant team, involved? The associated story being told is that of young boys procured in Russia for the sole purpose of donating hearts and other organs. Gerritsen paints a very credible picture of what could happen in the world of organ transplants, as well as touching on palliative care and who has rights over effective analgesia. Of course, she throws in suicide, murder, kidnapping, a bit of gunplay and a dockside swim, a plucky heroine and a tenacious cop. As expected, the medical aspect is spot-on and the novel has an edge-of-the-seat climax. Excellent early Gerritsen.
