In and Out of View models an expansion in how censorship is discursively framed. Contributors from varied backgrounds and practices focus on art production and reception from the mid-20th century to the present in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. In essays, conversations, statements, and letters, they invite consideration of the shifting contexts, values, needs, and acts through which artworks move into a out of view. At issue are overt constraints as well as discursive effects, such as erasure and distortion resulting from interpretive methods, canonical processes, and organizational policies. Perspectives, which are locally and globally relevant, resonate with ongoing debates concerning speech rights, language impacts, inequalities are imbalances, authority and the exercise of power, repatriation/restitution, and calls for change in the aims and actions of institutions and governments.
