This book reviews the physics, technology, and design issues related to metamaterials and metasurfaces. These are artificial materials that mimic natural materials but exhibit properties not available in nature like the reversal of Snell's law (exhibiting negative refractive index), reversal of Doppler Effect and reversed Cerenkov effect. Such artificial material was first designed and developed in 2001 and is now finding exotic applications like cloaking, sub-wavelength imaging and so forth including common applications in the improved and size miniaturized design of passive/ active components and antennas at microwave, terahertz (THz) and optical frequencies.
The book has six chapters (details are given in TOC). The first chapter provides an introduction to the fundamental issues of this material. The second chapter is devoted to the details of the two major types of metamaterial designed and developed so far viz plasmonic metamaterial and transmission line metamaterial. The third chapter deals with different types of metamaterial-inspired passive components, antennas, active devices and so forth including their design procedure and solved design problems. The content of the fourth chapter is on THz and optical metamaterial and their applications. The fifth chapter deals with the simulation based and experiment-based modelling and characterization of metamaterials. The final chapter, the sixth chapter, deals with the two-dimensional (2D) metamaterial i.e. the metasurfaces and its applications.
