Best-selling author Michael Freeman brings his years of experience to the study of the most enduring of photographic styles - black and white - taking both the theory and practice of this classic genre into the modern arena. Black and white photography is not only the purest expression of the image-making process, it is also an essential pathway to a better understanding of photographic principles. In this comprehensive guide to monochrome imaging, Freeman sets out to encourage personal creativity by explaining photographic practice in a thorough, clearly defined and above all usable way. Bringing black and white photography firmly up to date, this book will inform and inspire both monochrome purists and recent converts to the genre. Explains how to 'see' the world in black and white when shooting, and develop an instinct for the dynamics of black and white imagery. Gives a completely fresh take on the zone system, long a touchstone of advanced black and white craft, showing how it can and should be used for digital imagery. Looks at the special qualities of different black and white films and at the benefits of combining film and digital in the workflow.

Michael Freeman

Michael Freeman, professional photographer and best-selling author, was born in England in 1945, took a Masters in Geography at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. In 1971 he made the life-changing decision to travel up the Amazon with two secondhand cameras, and when Time-Life used many of the pictures he came back with, he embarked on a full-time photographic career.

Since then, working for clients that include all the world's major magazines, most notably the Smithsonian Magazine (for which he has shot more than 40 stories over 30 years), Freeman's reputation as one of the world's leading reportage photographers has been consolidated. Of his many books, which have sold over 4 million copies worldwide, more than 60 titles are on the practice of photography. For this photographic educational work he was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture.

Freeman's books on photography have been translated into 27 languages.
