It is March 30th 1924. It is Mothering Sunday.

How will Jane Fairchild, orphan and housemaid, occupy her time when she has no mother to visit? How, shaped by the events of this never to be forgotten day, will her future unfold?

Beginning with an intimate assignation and opening to embrace decades, Mothering Sunday has at its heart both the story of a life and the life that stories can magically contain. Constantly surprising, joyously sensual and deeply moving, it is Graham Swift at his thrilling best.

Graham Swift was born in 1949 and is the author of nine acclaimed novels, two collection of short stories, including the highly acclaimed England and Other Stories, and of Making an Elephant, a book of essays, portraits, poetry and reflections on his life in writing. With Waterland he won the Guardian Fiction Prize, and with Last Orders the Booker Prize. Both novels have since been made into films. Graham Swift's work has appeared in over thirty languages.

I didn't expect to be giving this book five stars but it completely went beyond my expectations. In little more than 100 pages, the reading experience is wonderfully gratifying. A simple book that stays with you begging to read again.

The story of housemaid Jane Fairchild and her affair with the wealthy heir, Paul Sheringham is captured exclusively in the events of one Sunday, Mothering Sunday 1924. The action is slowed down almost to a halt by the reflection in Jane's mind, not just of the world she's in, but the idea of words and storytelling itself.

Swift is an award-winning author and his prose is highly crafted - always cool but constantly evocative. This was a delight to read. Enjoy.
