Stacey Morrison has created an illustrated guide to Maori customs and practices for children (and adults), as a companion to her #1 bestselling My First Words in Maori.

My First Words about Tikanga Maori is a guide to Maori customs, practices and ways of doing things, and to the special words we use when talking about tikanga. With vibrant illustrations labelled in Maori and English, each page takes readers on a tour of various settings and situations, explaining the words, phrases and concepts we might encounter. Learn all about-
- powhiri (formal welcomes)
- hui (meetings)
- waiata (songs)
- mihimihi (greetings and introductions)
- forms of address
- manaaki (hospitality)
- aroha (showing love and compassion)
- kaitiakitanga (guardianship)
and so much more.

From removing our shoes as we enter a building to introducing ourselves and sharing kai, My First Words about Tikanga Maori is an excellent and practical guide for children and adults, Maori and Pakeha, New Zealanders and visitors to Aotearoa.

Designed for parents and tamariki to read together by Maori language champion and broadcaster Stacey Morrison, with engaging pictures by a team of young Maori artists, this is the perfect book to strengthen your language journey and embrace Maoritanga at home, at school, and out in the wider world.

Stacey Morrison

Stacey Morrison (Te Arawa, Ngai Tahu) is a radio and TV broadcaster whose projects have spanned 25 years. She is also a mama to three young tamariki who have been brought up with te reo Maori as their mother tongue. Stacey herself didn’t learn to speak Maori until she was an adult. It required a lot of research, determination, wonderful mentors and the support of a community to achieve her goal of becoming fluent by the time her children were born.

Stacey and her husband Scotty wrote Maori at Home to help other families use te reo in everyday settings, and they both work with many groups and families to build Maori-language friendships and community for whanau. Stacey has also been an advisor on pre-schooler and children’s TV shows, which, along with her experiences with her own children, has helped her identify the words children pick up early in their language learning.

As a winner of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori Champion Award in 2016 and a graduate of Te Panekiretanga o te Reo (the Institute of Excellence in Maori Language), Stacey loves encouraging the learning and use of our country’s beautiful native language.
