Without revealing this story in detail, it takes place before the Halo Array was fired, and before Masterchief.Simply, it's narrated by a young Forerunner, who goes on an adventure.

Along the way though -- for the Halo fans -- it explains; history of Forerunners, the Halo rings, and more about the Flood. Really pulling you into the story to read more.

I found Cyrptum to be an entertaining story, and I'm glad I read it, and excited for the next 2 in the Forerunner saga!
