A miserly uncle 'Scrooge' is guardian to a cute yet resilient little girl and her sister. There are some dark moments in the Count's exploitation of his ward and ambivalent concern over her true welfare.

Like most od Pullman's writing, there is a comeuppance to be had and maybe even a happily ever after?!

One of his better works.
