Set in a future world or another world, this is a story of a protected teenager going against her mother's will. She runs away with an android who just happens to be a newly released type of android. His particular line of manufacture is subsequently withdrawn and they both go into hiding in the slum area of the city. their life together is well drawn as is the ending. As Jane tries to leave the city with him so that he won't be discovered and destroyed, they are betrayed and he is taken. Jane tries to kill herself but is found in time and realises she has to live. She also realises she will not grieve so intensely for all time and that life will go on. She has learnt a lot about herself, a lot about her mother, and is a confident adult at the end of the book. Jane has also learnt about friendship real friends and false friends. the world in which the action is set is exotic and totally believable. the author is a master storyteller. the story is full of wonderful characters and the atmosphere is emotionally charged.
