David Kauffman-novelist, single parent, agnostic-is devastated by his young daughter's death, and desperate to know where she has gone. Soon he meets Gita Patekar, a beautiful and committed Believer who works for Life After Life, an organization dedicated to scientifically tracking and recording the experiences of the soul once it leaves the body. Despite Gita's warnings, David uses their computer to try to reach his daughter.
