Lady Rohana of Ardais and a female band of Free Amazons arrive in the Dry Towns of Darkover where all women are kept in chains, in order to free a royal captive and her slave-born daughter. The sequels are Thendara House (1983, 1988) and City of Sorcery (1984). The Shattered Chain has also been published in one volume with Thendara House, entitled Oath of the Renunciates (Doubleday, 1983). Bradley has written twenty-two novels set in the alternate world of Darkover. Darkover Landfall (1972) is the first in terms of internal chronology, but they need not be read in any specific order.
