Edward Clark, a successful young Philadelphia crime reporter, is assigned to write a series of exposés on mediums. In 1869, photographs of Civil War dead adorn sitting rooms and grieving families attempt to contact lost loved ones. Edward investigates beautiful young medium Lucy Collins and uncovers her tricks, then learns that she is also talented at blackmail. Since he has a hidden past, Edward agrees to collaborate in exposing only her rivals.
