Thomas Roch, a French inventor, conceives of a destructive weapon, the Fulgurator, which could blow to atoms anything within the zone of twelve thousand square yards. Roch goes to America to sell his invention and there he finds himself commanded to fire the weapon on a French ship.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist and playwright best known for his epic adventures, including Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in Eighty Days.
