Irene must be at the top of her game or she'll be off the case - permanently...

Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission - to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book.

Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested - the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own.

Soon, she's up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option - the nature of reality itself is at stake.

Genevieve Cogman’s ‘The Invisible Library’ isn’t a groundbreaking read, but it brings enough character, mystery and individuality that it can stand solid on its own, distinguish itself from other mystical novels and truly take the reader on a wild ride.

The story follows the librarian Irene as she is tasked to find a significant book in an alternate reality for the unfathomable invisible library. As her journey plunges further into her corrupt world full of danger, betrayal and mythical creatures, Irene’s mission only escalates in both danger and thrills.

I honestly really enjoyed Irene’s twisting adventure, as it was constantly changing, reinventing itself and skyrocketing its action higher… throw in a bit of magic, few twists, a killer villain and you have got some really unique storytelling. Cogman has done an incredible job in constructing a mythical steam-punk London and a strong narrative that really grabs the reader and holds on tight. Now if you still aren’t sure about reading this book then I may have forgotten to mention the cyborg alligators, tyrannous werewolves, great detective and giant robots!

This fantasy novel includes magic, vampires, Fae and alternate worlds. And one librarian in the middle of all of it. Irene has a lot to deal with in this story. Everyone wants the book she was sent to retrieve and she is given an assistant that is not what he seems. Teaming up with a detective, the newly formed trio, battle through the many obstacles in their path. There is action, intrigue, and mystery. It is an exciting story that was cleverly created by Genevieve. She has included a great deal of detail that brings the world to life. The characters are strong and determined, especially Irene. She is a fantastic protagonist that is a true librarian. A librarian who has both honour and morals. The twists and turns keep you guessing and makes it an enjoyable read.

This has zeppelins, werewolves, vampires, fairies, steampunk, a little bit of science fiction thrown in for good measure. As a result, it's a bit messy. As it's a debut novel, there are parts which are heavy on the internal monologues explaining the plot, instead of showing us something happening. The ending is good though.
