Hueffer is a skilled author who has drawn comparison to the great Mark Twain. He is quick of wit and clever with his words. Ladies Whose Bright Eyes is a fantastical story, but one that Hueffer grounds with his realistic depiction of the central characters. This is a well-paced novel and one that is representative of the author's style.
Readers unfamiliar with Ford Madox Hueffer's work may opt to start with one of his better known novels, but should not overlook Ladies Whose Bright Eyes: A Novel. This is a masterfully executed and well-written book, and one that deserves a wider audience than it has received.
