'It doesn't matter. I have books, new books, and I can bear anything as long as there are books.'

Fifteen-year-old Morwenna lives in Wales with her twin sister and a mother who spins dark magic for ill. One day, Mori and her mother fight a powerful, magical battle that kills her sister and leaves Mori crippled. Devastated, Mori flees to her long-lost father in England. Adrift, outcast at boarding school, Mori retreats into the worlds she knows best: her magic and her books. She works a spell to meet kindred souls and continues to devour every fantasy and science fiction novel she can lay her hands on. But danger lurks... She knows her mother is looking for her and that when she finds her, there will be no escape.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Mor is brilliant, her voice perfect, and while this is a fantasy more attention is paid to the magic of reading than to any spells. I want to ask Mor what she thought of Alan Garner's new book, or what she thinks about Terry Pratchett, and it's a bit of a blow to keep in mind that she's not actually real. This will resonate strongly with people who read a great deal (particularly fantasy and science fiction) in their teens.

A great book about what it's like to be a teenager that reads SF, in a time before the internet when you thought you were the only SF fan in the village. I spent many a summer schlepping to and from the library with stacks of books, reading them all in a couple of days and then going back for more. This book feels like those summers. Loved the references to classic SF and fantasy, although some of them were too obscure for me. My only complaint is the ending seems very abrupt and far too neat - but maybe I haven't picked up on some hidden message or clues; there are plenty of references to stories which aren't what they seem on the surface in this book, so maybe I'm just a bit thick.
