The year is 2008. It begins with a Malamute, dressed in an antique jacket and wearing spectacles. He is followed by others--German Shepherds, Dobermans and Great Danes all dressed in grand old Prussian style. Outfitted with voice boxes and prosthetic arms, the dogs are the result of an experiment begun years ago in the tiny Canadian village of Rankstadt. Though they lead a life of glamour and wealth, there is a strange incurable illness that threatens them with extinction.
