The story opens in London: the principal character, Professor Challenger, stubborn, with drooping eyelids and spade-shaped Assyrian beard, the Atheistic scientist, who declares that man is only ?four buckets of water and a bagful of salt,? and whose prejudice constitutes the conflict necessary to the plot. Then there is his beautiful daughter, Enid, and Edward Malone, the newspaper man who is writing with her a series of articles. At the opening of the story, they are setting out to report a spiritualistic meeting. Both of them are highly skeptical. The reader need not be told that they furnish the love element in the tale. The story with its mysterious events is unforgettable and interesting.
