Rip Van Winkle is a short story by American author Washington Irving published in 1819; throughout the story Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving relies heavily on the use of description in regards to both nature and characters. He drinks some of their mysterious brew and passes out. When he wakes up under a tree he is astonished to find that 20 years have passed and things are a lot different.

Washington Irving

Washington Irving was born in 1783 in New York City. In addition to writing fiction, Irving studied law, worked for his family's business in England and wrote essays for periodicals.

Some of his most famous tales, including Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, were first published under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon.

Arthur Rackham

Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was a British illustrator.
