Christian virgins, seductive `adventuresses', insane Emperors, savage lions, and racing chariots. But, as David Mayer shows, the plays also ventured clandestinely into issues of class, gender,
religion, immigration, and imperialism and hence shed new light on British and American social and cultural history.
