Jim Heron, disgruntled fallen angel, thinks that he finally has a leg up against Devinia, a devil's minion, in their fight over seven souls to end the war against good and evil. This is because Jim knows exactly which earthly soul he needs to save: a distant single father of a 13-year-old son. Luckily, Jim thinks that he can leverage the power of love, because this man is in love with a careful woman previously burnt by lust. So instead, Jim focuses his attentions on Sissy, the young soul he saved from Devinia's clutches, who is now transitioning to her life as an angel.

>But things are more complicated than they seem, because someone else is in love with that careful woman - the twin of the man whose soul needs saving. And unfortunately, this twin is the better contender for romance - he's a good-hearted sensitive musician. Torn between gentle support and steamy passion, will this woman make the choice that brings a brooding, broken soul to redemption? Or will that soul be doomed to endure the most hellish possession?

Possession is the fifth book in the Fallen Angels series by American author, J.R.Ward. With the score between the evil Devina and the saviour Jim Heron now three souls to one in Jims favour, Jim takes the wholly unexpected step of giving away one of his wins to Devina in exchange for the release of Sissy Bartens soul from Hell. Of course, Jim has not thought through the further ramifications of this drastic action: Archangel Nigels shocking action is matched only by Archangel Colins reaction; Adrian, meanwhile, is concerned that Jim is ignoring the war in his distraction with Sissy. And the soul in question for the fifth round of the war? Could it be childrens book illustrator, Cait Douglass, who seems torn between her attraction for the charismatic G.B. Holde, and the sexy Duke Phillips? Could it be G.B., singer, composer and actor, who seems perhaps a little too good to be true? Could it be reticent road-worker and Iron Mask bouncer, Duke, who has a past he is unwilling to reveal? As Devina continues to collect trophies and play dirty, she seems to be gaining the upper hand (although her session with Adrian is ironically humorous). She makes a rather intriguing suggestion to Jim, one of several twists in the plot. Sissy, too, is a surprise once she recovers somewhat from her ordeal, both in character and abilities. Fans of Wards BDB series will be delighted mentions and cameos of characters from that series. Wards characters are engaging, her plot original and her dialogue has its own special appeal. There are plenty of hints and unanswered questions to have fans seeking out the next book in this addictive series, Immortal.
