Private Games is the second of the Private International series by James Patterson, set in London at the time of the 2012 Olympic Games (very topical) and co-written with Mark T. Sullivan. Private has been engaged by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games to assist with security. Privates London office has just suffered a massive blow with the loss of five of its staff in a suspicious plane crash (thereby neatly, in one sentence, disposing of Dan Carter, Kirsty Webb, Suzy Malone and Wendy Lee, characters only just introduced to the reader in Private London) and Jack Morgan has put Peter Knight in charge. Peter has plenty of other issues to deal with too: still mourning his wife, Kate, he has challenging 3 year old twins who manage to see off all nannies quick smart, and a sister-in-law, Inspector Elaine Pottersfield of the Metropolitan Police, who blames him for Kates death. Then a member of LOCOG, Denton Marshall, soon to be Peters step-father, is found beheaded. An individual referring to himself as Cronus claims responsibility by letter to Sun reporter Karen Pope. This is another fast-paced, action-packed short-chapter Patterson thriller. Into it, he manages to pack war criminals, a madman with delusions of grandeur, murder by knife, poisoned water, bullet, poison dart and exploding magnesium, kidnapping, doping, novel technologies like GPS jewellery and not a few red herrings. The premise of the story is, on the whole, quite plausible and very topical in the current climate of terrorism, increased security and ID theft. A quick read.
