Right from Wring shows not only the folly of religious arguments about morality, but outlines a secular system that enables us to identify an objective morality, "one That rises above any particular individual or society" in the words of the author Mark Alan Smith. In these pages Smith adroitly demonstrates that "God's supposed revelation in the Bible is, in fact, a poor guide to morality," and that "to any person holding modern values, the Bible contains horrifying provisions condemning homosexuality and supporting genocide, patriarchy, slavery, collective punishment, and capital punishment for minor offenses." Of course, most modern religious believers are thoroughgoing Enlightenment moralists who have mostly embraced the moral progress over the centuries (albeit slowly), so as Smith shows, "Christian apologists have eliminated the unsavory verses and passages by essentially rewriting what they call the Word of God." Smith then shows that modern Muslims do the same with the Quran. The core of this brilliant treatise is to provide a rational answer to a common question believers ask, which Smith allows a YouTuber to voice: "I've always wondered what people who don't believe in the Bible and the descriptions of right and wrong in there ... on what do you base your personal ways of determining what's good and bad?" Right from Wrong provides an answer, namely what Smith calls inclusive deliberation. "Deliberation is a form of reason in which people gather information, make arguments, evaluate evidence, listen to the perspectives of others," he writes, and therefore "this deliberation must include all kinds of people. To the extent that racial, ethnic, gender, or religious minorities are excluded from participating through legal or social means, any seemingly deliberative process will be tilted against their ideas and interests."
