Set in the 1980s, this book is unusual in that it is considered an immersive read and features a mixtape list to encourage the reader to listen to while reading. The story is set in a fictitious American town in 89 where writers are mysteriously disappearing. Josie is alternative and loves 80s bands such as The Cure, New Order, and aspires to be a journalist. She dresses in op shop clothes and doesn't care that she is ridiculed in senior high for being different. Life becomes a whirlwind of chaos as an attractive outsider from Los Angeles, who bears a resemblance to a young Billy Idol, moves in next door. Their love for alternative music initiates a friendship that develops into love. However, Josie's life is in danger as she accepts a cadetship at the local newspaper answering an advice column and has been sent mysterious letters warning her of the threat that is hidden behind every corner in Haven Cove. Time is running out for Josie as she and Blaine must uncover the mystery of who or what is behind the writers' disappearances before it is too late. Wow! This book is like a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. The inclusion of an '80s songs list makes the book magical, and the main characters, in a way, become real to the reader because of their heartfelt presence throughout this book. I am genuinely impressed and can't wait for the sequel to come out in December. I did some research and found that Sonia is an Indie QLD author who definitely deserves recognition for her fantastic work. I could seriously see this series being turned into films because the storyline is so unique and hasn't been done before. Her reviews are consistently five stars in the United States, where she appears to be marketing the most. You won't be disappointed if you buy this book, and you'll be supporting an Australian indie author in the process.
