This biography of Sylvia Pankhurst explores her lifelong political activism for a variety of radical causes, including women's rights, labour organization and international solidarity movements. Pankhurst made pioneering contributions to revolutionary communist politics and the struggles against imperialism, racism and fascism. In addition, she founded and edited four newspapers, and wrote and published 22 books and pamphlets and countless articles. This book provides a reappraisal of a woman whose contribution to a wide variety of causes is often overlooked, whether as the employer of the first black journalist in Britain - the activist and writer Claude McKay - or as an early campaigner for pan-Africanism.
