A celebration of literature, love, and the power of the human spirit, this warm, funny, tender, and thoroughly entertaining novel is the story of an English author living in the shadow of World War II and the writing project that will dramatically change her life. An international bestseller.

The beloved, life-affirming international bestseller--now a major film coming in April 2018, starring Lily James, Matthew Goode, Jessica Brown Findlay, Tom Courtenay and Penelope Wilton.

It's 1946. The war is over, and Juliet Ashton has writer's block. But when she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey--a total stranger living halfway across the Channel, who has come across her name written in a second hand book--she enters into a correspondence with him, and in time with all the members of the extraordinary Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Through their letters, the society tell Juliet about life on the island, their love of books--and the long shadow cast by their time living under German occupation. Drawn into their irresistible world, Juliet sets sail for the island, changing her life forever.

Gloriously honest, enchanting and funny, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is sure to win your heart.

Mary Ann Shaffer

Mary Ann Shaffer was born in 1934 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She worked as an editor, a librarian and in bookshops. She became interested in Guernsey while visiting London in 1976. On a whim, she decided to fly to Guernsey but became stranded there as a heavy fog descended and no boats or planes were permitted to leave the island.

As she waited for the fog to clear, she came across a book called Jersey Under the Jack-Boot, and so her fascination with the Channel Isles began. Many years later, when goaded by her own literary club to write a book, Mary Ann naturally thought of Guernsey. Mary Ann died in February 2008. She knew that this, her only novel, was to be published in thirteen countries.

Before she died she wrote, 'I must tender special thanks to my niece, Annie, who stepped in to finish this book after unexpected health issues interrupted my ability to work shortly after the manuscript was sold. Without blinking an eye, she put down the book she was writing, pushed up her sleeves, and set to work on my manuscript. It was my great good luck to have a writer like her in the family, and this book could not have been done without her.'

I loved this book and could not put it down. It is a lovely story and in reading it I could not put it down. I have passed it on to others who've also thoroughly enjoyed it. Brilliant writing!

reminds me of 84 Charing Cross Road
absolutely delightful and only takes a few pages to get used to the format.
A truly excellent book with a little bit of everything. One that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy without being twee.

Having just re-read this one along with my local book club, I'm so happy to report that The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society perfectly withstands the scrutiny of re-reading. If anything, I loved it even more the second time round.

Juliet is a journalist struggling to find her footing (and her literary mojo) in postwar London when, through a series of events, she begins corresponding with the members of a literary society on the island of Guernsey, which was under German occupation during the war. Through the letters, Juliet begins to piece together a picture of what life was like for Guernsey's inhabitants during wartime. Their stories are heart-wrenching and vivid, but with a gentleness in their delivery. More than mere history, however, Juliet begins to know the people themselves, and soon she realises she must meet them.

Books told entirely in epistolary format can sometimes lag, particularly when the narrative criss-crosses itself and dips back and forth between the past and the present. This isn't the case with The Guernsey & c. Although it is gentle and warm, it's also compelling and snappy, with a really generous dose of intelligence and wit. It's a favourite that I'm happy to recommend to everyone.
