The Namesake was actually my HSC Belonging text. As a student I found that most texts were rather boring at times but this was a wonderful book to read. (There is actually also a movie too!) It was tear jerking and truly displayed insight into the idea of belonging. The book explored this through the portrayal of protagonists who experienced social barriers of culture and heritage that often at times, gave us feelings of alienation and helped us as readers, understand the troubles and feelings of home sickness and the desire to belong. Lahiri also successfully illustrates that belonging is a concept that evolves through time and experiences when Ashima and Gogol finally begin to accept their respective cultures of America and India towards the end of the novel.
