A critical edition of Gaskell's first works containing a comprehensive selection of texts and expert annotation. This new edition brings together Gaskell academics from around the world providing readers with the most recent scholarship on her work and bringing the crusading spirit and genius of the writer into the 21st-century to take her place alongside Charles Dickens and George Eliot as a major Victorian writer. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) is increasingly known for her novels which have been popularised in paperback and on television. Indeed after reading "Mary Barton" (1848), Charles Dickens put her at the top of his list of contributors to his journal "Household Words", telling her that there was 'no living writer' he would rather enlist. Gaskell's first taste of success came from her short fiction, published in "Household Words" and "Howitt's Journal" among others. Besides her fiction Gaskell also produced biographical writing and journalism of a high calibre, much of which has never been published before. This will be found to be of interest to students of Gaskell, Victorian studies and women's writing.
