In the evening of 6 August 1908, Josef Szombathy boarded a boat from Vienna to Aggsbach to take a carriage to Willendorf on the following day. He never suspected for one minute that he was about to make one of the greatest archaeological finds in human history - the Venus of Willendorf. Created 25,000 years ago, it is one of the most famous female figures in the history of mankind. Through his camera, Lois Lammerhuber offers the reader a close look never seen before: Venus from all sides, with a wealth of details, down to the tiniest pore of the stone. In their essays, the Venus experts of Vienna's Natural History Museum, Walpurga Antl-Weiser and Anton Kern, provide a glimpse into the world of the Stone Age period. The hardbound book is in a slipcase with a 3D image of the statue. AUTHOR: Walpurga Antl-Weiser was born in Stillfried/March, one of the longest established archeological sites of Lower Austria. She studied Prehistory and Early History and is currently curator of the Palaeolithic collection at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. For many years, the Venus of Willendorf has been a core theme of her scientific work on the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Anton Kern was born in Mistelbach/Zaya. He is the director of the Department of Prehistory at Vienna's Natural History Museum and curator and custodian of unique archeological treasures, among them the extraordinary Venus of Willendorf. Since 1993, he has led the excavations at the prehistoric burial site of Hallstatt. Lois Lammerhuber is a photographer and publisher. His photos have been published in hundreds of books and magazines and received international prizes. Three times he was awarded the Graphis Photo Award for the best reportage of the year. In 1996, he founded the Edition Lammerhuber publishing company. Many of his books have found international acclaim.
