Known as the Father of the Underground Railroad for his efforts in moving fugitive enslaved Africans while recording their harrowing stories, William Still lived a life dedicated to the betterment of all mankind during the dark days of American slavery. His book The Underground Rail Road, first published in 1872, provides a first-hand account of the tribulations faced by those seeking to live free from bondage. Born in Shamong, Burlington County, New Jersey, during 1821, William was the son of slaves, which provided him with the impetus to aid others.
