From the author of The Power Broker and The Years of Lyndon Johnson, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Book Awards, an unprecedented gathering of vivid, candid, deeply moving personal pieces about his own experiences researching and writing the books everywhere hailed as masterpieces. In Working, Robert Caro describes what it was like to interview the mighty Robert Moses and to begin to discover the vastness of Moses' political power; the combination of discouragement and exhilaration he felt confronting the millions of documents in the Lyndon 8. Johnson Library; his encounters with witnesses ranging from families wrenchingly displaced to make way for Moses' highways to Lady Bird Johnson acknowledging the beauty and influence of one of LBJ's mistresses. And, for the first time, Caro writes about himself: about how, after years of solitude, he found a writers community; about the moments in which he came to understand that he wanted to write not just about the men who wielded power but about the effect of that power on the people for whom, or against whom, it was wielded; about how important the writing itself is to him; about how he tries to bring characters and scenes to life on the page. Taken together, these reminiscences bring into focus the passion, the wry self-deprecation, and the integrity with which this brilliant historian has approached his work since his days as a young struggling writer.
