The play is a farcical take on the mythological story of Amphitryon, the king of Tiryns, and his wife, Alcmene, from Greek mythology. In Molière’s version, the gods Jupiter and Mercury descend to Earth and play elaborate tricks on the human characters, leading to a series of humorous misunderstandings and deceptions. The plot begins with Amphitryon, a noble general, returning home after a victorious battle. He plans to surprise his wife, Alcmene, but unknown to him, Jupiter, the king of the gods, has disguised himself as Amphitryon and spent the night with Alcmene. Meanwhile, Mercury, the messenger god, also takes on the guise of a servant in Amphitryon’s household. The gods’ impersonations create confusion, as Alcmene, unaware of the deception, falls in love with the "Amphitryon" who is actually Jupiter.
