E. Nesbit's Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare offers a delightful introduction to the world of Shakespeare for young readers. This charming adaptation skillfully retells some of the Bard's most famous plays, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and Hamlet, among others. Nesbit, a beloved children's author in her own right, masterfully simplifies the complex plots and language of Shakespeare, making these timeless tales accessible and engaging for a younger audience. Instead of lengthy speeches and intricate verse, Nesbit presents the stories in a clear and captivating prose style, preserving the essence of the original while removing obstacles for younger readers. The magical elements, romantic entanglements, and dramatic conflicts that define Shakespeare's work are all present, but presented in a way that is both exciting and easy to follow. The book sparks imagination and encourages a love for storytelling, potentially igniting a lifelong appreciation for Shakespeare's genius. While preserving the core narratives, Nesbit's adaptation also subtly reflects the sensibilities and values of her time, offering a unique historical lens through which to view these iconic plays. This makes Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare not just a children's book, but also a fascinating piece of literary history. It serves as a wonderful bridge between classic literature and young readers, fostering a love of reading and a curiosity about the enduring power of Shakespeare's works. Whether read aloud or enjoyed independently, this book provides an enriching and enjoyable experience for both children and those wishing to revisit these beloved stories in a refreshing perspective. William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in 1564. The date of his birth is unknown but is celebrated on 23 April, which happens to be St George's Day, and the day in 1616 on which Shakespeare died.

Aged eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children. Around 1585 William joined an acting troupe on tour in Stratford from London, and thereafter spent much of his life in the capital. By 1595 he had written five of his history plays, six comedies and his first tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. In all, he wrote thirty-seven plays and much poetry, and earned enormous fame in his own lifetime in prelude to his immortality.
