In the ethnography "Coffee Reading and Narrative Healing in Bint Jbeil", Dagher explores the overlooked practice of "tobsir" or coffee reading, a form of divination that is deeply meaningful to the women of Bint Jbeil in South Lebanon. Based on fieldwork from March 2021 to September 2022, she shows how "tobsir" fosters social bonding, stress relief, and symbolic healing amid Lebanon's ongoing crises.
The "bassara", or coffee reader, blends form-based and intuitive methods to turn women's anxieties into empowering narratives away from the every day worries. Far from mere superstition, Dagher reveals "tobsir" as a vital emotional outlet and a source of comfort in uncertain times.
