This is the two volume set of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, first published in 1835 and 1840, in which the author examines the democratic revolution that he believed had been occurring over the previous several hundred years. He believed this social change would lead to more equality and widespread economic opportunity. He also speculates on the future of democracy in the United States, discussing possible threats to democracy and possible dangers of democracy.
