"Fidelity" centers on the story of Ruth Holland, a woman who returns to her small hometown after having left years earlier in scandal. Ruth had run away with a married man, an act that led to her being ostracized by her community. Her return forces the town to confront its rigid moral codes and prejudices, as well as Ruth's own feelings of guilt, love, and independence.Susan Glaspell's writing in "Fidelity" is likely characterized by its keen insight into human psychology and social dynamics. The novel delves deeply into the struggles of a woman caught between her desires and the oppressive expectations of society. Through Ruth's journey, Glaspell examines the nature of fidelity not just in romantic relationships, but also to oneself and one's principles.
